The Forgotten War in Sudan

The ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has persisted for two years, has worsened the humanitarian crisis and intensified the suffering of those affected, resulting in devastating human and material losses. More than 12 million people have been displaced to safer areas, and over 3 million have sought refuge outside the country, in addition to the killing and wounding of tens of thousands. The conflict has also severely disrupted basic services in the affected states, such as healthcare and clean water, in many regions.
Ms. Aida Al-Sayed Abdullah, Secretary General of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, said: “Since the outbreak of fighting, the Society has been greatly and directly affected at the headquarters and in many of its branches, with 28 volunteers tragically losing their lives while performing their humanitarian duty, as well as five employees who lost their lives. Property, equipment, electronic devices, vehicles, and fully equipped ambulances were also damaged, destroyed, and warehouses were looted or destroyed.

However, this did not prevent the Society from being present on the ground to support and assist those affected. The Society has mobilized more than 12,000 active volunteers who are on the front lines of emergency response, performing their humanitarian duty in an extremely difficult environment. Their activities included providing first aid, healthcare, evacuation, distribution of food and non-food items, psychological support services, searching for missing persons, shelter, in addition to managing corpses, cleaning campaigns, and environmental sanitation.” The Secretary General affirmed the Society’s commitment to continue providing humanitarian assistance to those affected to alleviate their suffering.

The Secretary-General added, "The loss of the Society's basic resources since the war has made it in dire need of support. We call on the international community to provide further support to the Society to re-establish its headquarters and its affected branches and to enhance its ability to continue providing essential humanitarian aid and meet the urgent needs of those affected by the fighting."

The Sudanese Red Crescent Society, in cooperation with its partners and through its volunteers spread throughout all Sudanese states, plays a pivotal role in providing essential medical assistance to hospitals, opening free field clinics, providing relief to displaced persons and their host communities, restoring family ties, and distributing cash assistance to those affected by the fighting and those affected by food shortages to meet their basic needs.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in Sudan reaffirms its commitment to providing protection and life-saving assistance to individuals affected by the ongoing conflict.

Without support, the people of Sudan will face severe humanitarian consequences, as they will be unable to meet their basic needs.
